What is PrEP?
Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is a medication taken by people who don't have HIV but are at high risk of getting it. When taken consistently, PrEP is highly effective at preventing HIV infection.
How Effective is PrEP?
Research shows that PrEP is highly effective when taken as prescribed:
- Reduces risk of HIV from sex by about 99%
 - Reduces risk from injection drug use by at least 74%
 - Effectiveness increases with consistent daily use

Who Should Consider PrEP?
PrEP might be right for you if you:
- Are sexually active and don't always use condoms
 - Have a partner who is HIV-positive
 - Share needles or other drug injection equipment
 - Have been diagnosed with other STIs

Getting Started with PrEP
To start PrEP, you'll need to:
- Get tested for HIV (you must be HIV-negative)
 - Get tested for other STIs
 - Get kidney function tests
 - Discuss your risk factors with a healthcare provider

Side Effects and Monitoring
Most people tolerate PrEP well, but some may experience mild side effects like nausea or headache. Regular monitoring includes HIV testing every 3 months and kidney function checks every 6 months.
